? Provision of topic for the literature review/critique

You need to write a literature review/critique for the following topic.

Financial statement analysis has long been a major instrument to predict the probability

of bankruptcy of firms. However, significant corporate scandals have revealed that

financial statements are not reliable to estimate the firm’s default (bankruptcy) risk.

Recent literature finds that the non-financial information and other financial

information (non-conventional financial ratios) are significant indicators of firm

performance indicating that they convey additional relevant information over

accounting ratios and stock price information. Among many, the following two factors

are highlighted in recent literature.

(A) How the corporate governance affects the corporate bankruptcy risk.

(B) How the tax avoidance activities (tax sheltering or tax planning) affect the corporate

bankruptcy risk.

Each group MUST choose one of the topics, either (A) or (B).

Find relevant literature (minimum 10 journal articles) on your choice of the topic (A or

B), and carry out the literature review.

Assessment 2 FIN 921 – 2019 Trimester 1 Dr Maria Kim

? Description of how to conduct LITERATURE REVIEW/CRITIQUE

The aim of a literature review is to show that the writer has studied existing work in the

field with insight. It is not enough merely to show what others in the field have

discovered. You need to view the work of others with insight to review critically. The

type of literature relevant to your assignment is academic journal articles. The purpose

of literature review is to provide readers with background information on a particular

topic by summarising and evaluating existing findings (i.e. knowledge) discovered by

others. A literature review is not a list in which you describe and summarise one piece

of literature after another. A literature review requires you to make explicit connections

between relevant studies and identify trends, agreements/disagreements, gaps (i.e.

unexplored areas) and contradictions in existing works.
