Final Paper: You will also be required to write a 10-page paper on a topic related to the material covered in this course. The paper is worth 100 points, out of the possible 300 points possible in this course.

Final Paper Topic:

  • The paper that you write will be based on a topic related to constitutional issues in the criminal justice system.
  • As discussed in class, the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 8th Amendments of the U.S. Constitution have implications in criminal justice. (The 1st Amendment may also apply to issues related to inmates).
  • You will select one of the aforementioned amendments as the focus of your paper.
  • You should include the language of the amendment you have chosen in your paper.
  • You can discuss how the amendment has been explored, analyzed, and interpreted by the U.S. Supreme Court (or lower courts). In other words, caselaw needs to be discussed in the paper.
  • You should also pick a specific focus. Examples include, but are not limited to:
    • Miranda rights (5th Amendment)
    • Vehicle searches (4th Amendment)
    • Consent searches
    • Right to counsel (6th Amendment)
    • Constitutional Rights of Inmates
    • Constitutional Challenges to the Death Penalty
  • You should also conclude your paper by discussing how you anticipate the law on this particular issue to develop in the future. This may be based on your discussion of the issue in your paper, including how things have developed over time.
    • For instance, based on previous decisions and some states recently abolishing the death penalty, do you see the U.S. Supreme Court deciding in the next decade or so that the death penalty is unconstitutional?
  • You are more than welcome to discuss your paper topic with me before settling on it.

Final Paper Due Date:

  • The paper is due on Sunday, December 2nd, 2018.
  • The paper will be submitted via blackboard.
  • You are more than welcome to submit the paper early if you’d like.

Sources for Final Paper:

  • You are required to cite a minimum of 10 sources in your papers. That is the bare minimum. Please feel free to cite more. In fact, you may find that more than 10 sources are needed to fully explore your topic.
  • Possible sources include, but are not limited to: case law, academic journal articles, and law review articles.
  • Sources should be cited using APA (American Psychological Association). See http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01 for the APA guide and the proper way to cite using APA.
  • As discussed below in the formatting requirements section, you may also use footnotes.
  • You do not need to be worried about doing an abstract per APA instructions.
  • Use the APA guidelines for your in-text citations and for the format of your list of references.

Final Paper Format: Papers must be exactly 10 pages (no more, no less), double-spaced, 1” margins, 12pt. Times New Roman font. You must also include a References page and a cover page, neither of which will be included in your final page count. Please include the following information on your Cover Page (Student Name, CRCJ 5327, Fall 2018, Title of Paper). All information must be cited with a source (See above section for information on finding APA guidelines) where necessary. Any uncited information will be considered PLAGIARISM, resulting in an automatic failing grade. Plagiarism is a serious academic offense and will not be taken lightly.
