Mariesely Villanueva & Xioneydy Ortiz HUS 3806: Vulnerable Populations Across the Lifespan Professor B. Garcia New York City College of Technology November 24, 2020 Group: Toddlers Troy is shy, playful, smart, and a healthy two-year-old male, but is very shy. His parents are Anthony a 34-year-old computer technician and Laura a 32-year-old fashion designer. Both of Troy’s parents have significant career goals. Laura returned to work sixteen weeks after Troy was born. They have been married for eight years and Troy is their first and only child. Although they appear to be caring parents, they are focused on their career goals. While Troy’s behavior is generally good, he has the tendency to be reserved at times in different social situations. After his mother returned to work, his paternal grandmother has helped take care of him for about 8 months. After that Troy was introduced to a local day care center with an outstanding reputation. At first, Troy reacted quite negatively to the situation, crying, and not wanting to be a part of classroom activities, but he eventually stood in the daycare without any incident. However, he continued to withdraw during playtime activities and had minimum interaction with the other children. When Troy gets home, he becomes explosive and requires a great amount of attention. In regard to Troy’s development for his age, he has met most of the milestones. Troy has demonstrated his fine motor skills. Troy has the ability to pick up a plastic baseball bat and swing it. He was not swinging it the correct way but was able to pick up on how his paternal grandfather swings, who used to be a baseball player and occasionally practices in his backyard. Also, Troy’s paternal grandparents usually give small gifts wrapped in paper and he is able to tear the paper off with little to no assistance. Troy started crawling at about 7 months and has been walking since he was about 10 months. Troy has been running since about 14 months or so. While at home he runs from his parents and he gets upset when they catch him and tell him not to run away. He is beginning to show defiant behaviors. Troy does not like being told what to do and gets upset and resists his parents.HUS 3806 NYC College of Technology Toddlers Stages of Development Presentation

This resistant behavior is also seen when Troy’s peers also try to tell him what to do. Troy shows his frustrations and can go through many different moods within a short period of time. One thing that Troy loves to do is rebel and resist what his parents tell him to do. When it is time for Troy to eat, he often takes a couple of small bites and then aggressively throws his spoon on the ground. When his spoon is picked up, he throws it once again. His parents verbalize that if he does it again, he will get in trouble. Troy gets mad when is told that will get in trouble and throws the spoon again to the ground, even after being told that there will be consequences if the spoon is thrown once more. Troy is verbal and is learning to put sentences together. He has the desire to explore new objects. He is also showing greater independence and is imitating the behavior of others. Troy has begun toilet training but still wears diapers at the daycare, due to occasional mistakes. Those occasional mistakes do not usually happen at Troy’s home because he can be monitored better, while being under parental supervision. One thing that Troy struggles with is crawling down stairs backwards. This most likely would have not been an issue, but Troy fell down the steps when he was one year old, while he crawled downstairs backwards. This experience was traumatic for Troy. He is now very afraid to intent once more, so he scoots on his bottom down the stairs. Troy seems to have some maladaptation’s when outside of his home. The behaviors taken by Troy slightly indicate that are caused due to insecure attachment in the home. This eventually causes a lack of confidence when Troy has to eventually face the world outside of the comfort of his own home. Troy exhibits signs of separation anxiety, which is normal at this stage of development especially when going to the daycare. Troy has not been diagnosed with any mental delays at the moment. Troy’s family does not have any known mental diagnoses, nor any known history of substance use.
