NURS 415: Spring 2017 Ethical Issues in Nursing The purpose of the assignment is to provide the student with an opportunity to analyze an ethical issue in nursing. Ethical Issues in Nursing Paper. The student will analyze an ethical dilemma, make a decision, and support the decision with literature to include the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics for Nurses. What is an ethical dilemma? An ethical dilemma is a situation in which: • • • • Two or more choices are available. It is difficult to determine which choice is best. Available alternatives cannot solve the needs of all those involved. Each alternative in a dilemma may have both favorable and unfavorable features. Things to keep in mind about ethical decision-making:  The significance of ethical decision-making is that very different ethical choices regarding the same ethical dilemma can be made resulting in neither choice being a “right or wrong” decision.  How you decide the ethically right thing to do will depend on how you ethically define the situation and which values and ethical principles you use. Assignment: a. You will complete the writing assignment, referring to the guidelines and rubric, based on an ethical dilemma you have faced or observed as a nursing student or practicing nurse in the clinical setting. Do not use names of hospitals or individuals. b. Then you will identify sections from the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics (2015) in resolving this dilemma—identifying which provisions are most relevant to your scenario. This could be a discussion about how the dilemma actually played out or how you would have hypothetically resolved the dilemma using the MORAL Model (described below). c. Use each step of the MORAL Model, describing how you worked through the ethical dilemma. How did you resolve it (actual or hypothetically)? Include relevant ethical principles when you address resolving the dilemma. d. The paper should be no longer than 5 pages (excluding title page & references page). 1 NURS 415: Spring 2017 Note: If you did not experience any dilemmas, you may find a nursing journal article that relates to an ethical situation. If using a journal article & the decision is made for you, you do not have to abide by the decision discussed in the article. Once you examine the situation you may decide that another decision would have been more beneficial. Contact your mentor if you have any questions about what to choose as your dilemma. The paper should be no longer than 5 pages (excluding title page & references page). General Writing Guidelines: 1. Discuss the dilemma to be addressed-This should be in your introductory paragraph and should include a clear understanding of the problem to be addressed as well as an appropriate topic statement. 2. Identify the people involved in the ultimate decision -Who are the people involved and what are their roles in decision-making? Determine the rights, duties, authority, and capabilities of all decision-makers in the situation. Identify each key player’s values (if you are aware of them).NURS 415: Ethical Issues in Nursing
Consider alternatives (at least 2) and short- and long-term consequences of each alternative – Identify a number of alternatives (at least 2) and in detail evaluate each on the basis of whether or not there is interest and concern over the welfare of all involved in the decision. 3. 4. Make the decision- Make a decision and formulates a plan that is a thoughtful reflection on the benefits and consequences of action. 5. Incorporate the ANA (American Nurses Association) Code of Ethics for Nurses Examine the ANA Code of Ethics and clearly articulate which provision or provisions relate to this ethical situation. 6. Conclusion- the conclusion of the paper should reiterate the main points. It should never introduce new ideas or things not discussed in the body of the paper. Pretend you are trying to convince the reader, in this case, the ethics committee, that your thesis has merit. This is the point where you’ll persuade others to adopt your thesis. You can begin by restating the theme, then review the facts you cited in the body of the paper in support of your ideas and end with a final reiteration of the theme. Try not to repeat the exact language you used in other areas of the paper, especially the introduction. 7. Reflection- Reflect on or evaluate what you learned. 2 NURS 415: Spring 2017 MORAL Model (Patricia Crisham, University of Minnesota) M Massage the Dilemma (#1 & 2 in rubric) O Outline Options (#3 in rubric) R Review Criteria and Resolve (This fits well with #7 in rubric) A Act (This is your decision~ #4 in rubric) L Look Back and Evaluate MORAL Model for ethical decision making: http://www.kumc.edu/instruction/nursing/APGN/SpecCrO3.htm 3 NURS 415: Spring 2017 Grading Rubric for Ethical Decision Making Writing Assignment Student Learning Outcomes Exemplary 1.Students will clearly state the focus of the paper in an introductory paragraph Accomplished Developing Beginning The topic statement is comprehensive, clearly stated, focused, and demonstrates a clear understanding of the problem to be addressed.
